There are three impressive experiences in Christchurch for me.
First, I saw a kiwi at the zoo.When I was in elementary school, I studied about kiwis in class.I knew it was rare birds. There are only two birds in Japan. I wanted to see that someday.This time, I was able to go to the zoo in the city and see kiwis.They are nocturnal. They lived in a dark room. It was difficult to find them. It was bigger than I thought. But,they were so cute.
Second, the starry sky in New Zealand.My host family took me to Mt Cook National Park. I joined a stargazing tour.Mount Cook National Park has New Zealand's highest peak and longest glacier. It is a famous stargazing spot in the world. It was very cold because it was late at night, but the air was clear and the stars were clearly visible. Tour guide explained in English. So I couldn't understand well, butI saw the Southern Cross. I saw constellations that cannot be seen in Japan.We also saw the moon through an astronomical telescope. I saw Saturn. I was impressed.
Third, I joined a swimming competition.I go swimming six days a week and I want to be a swimmer. When I told host mother that I wanted her to take me to the pool to swim. She asked me, "If that's the case, would you like to join a swimming competition?"She was the president of a swim club, so she told me that she could set me up to race as exhibition swimmer.I had never been to a pool in NZ before, and I didn't know what was going on around me then.However, I was able to join the host mother’s swim club twice. I could meet the members of the club. My host mother praised me for my swimming. So I decided to enter the competition. On the day of the tournament, the pool was bigger than I expected and there were many people in the audience seat. I was nervous. ButI was able to get first prize and I could get an award ribbon.The award ribbon is displayed in my room.
Through the stay in NZ, I was able to experience many things that I could not experience in Japan.I want to make use of these in my future life.
自分へ挑戦
僕が今回のクライストチャーチ訪問青少年生活体験団の活動を通して印象に残っていることは三つあります。
一つ目は、動物園でキーウィを見たことです。僕は、小学生の時に授業でキーウィの生態について調べたことがあります。日本には二羽しかいない、飛べない珍しい鳥だと知って、いつか見たいと思っていました。今回、市内の動物園に行ってキーウィを見ることができました。夜行性なので、暗い部屋の中で飼育されていて、四匹いるはずなのになかなか見つけることができませんでした。キーウィは思っていたより大きかったですが、とてもかわいかったです。
二つ目は、ニュージーランドの星空です。ホストファミリーがマウント・クック国立公園へ連れて行ってくれて、星空観察ツアーに参加しました。マウント・クック国立公園にはニュージーランド最高峰と最も長い氷河があります。都会の明かりから遠いこの公園は、世界でもトップクラスの星空観察スポットだそうです。夜遅かったのでとても寒かったのですが、その分、空気が澄んでいて星がきれいに見えました。ガイドの人が説明しながらのツアーでしたが、英語での説明だったので、理解できない事がたくさんありましたが、南十字星など、日本では見ることのできない星座を見ることができました。また、天体望遠鏡で月のクレーターや、土星のリングを見ることも出来て感動しました。
三つ目は、水泳の大会にエキシビジョンで出場させてもらったことです。僕が週6日水泳に通っていて、水泳選手になりたいと思っているので、プールに泳ぎにつれて行ってほしいと伝えたら、「それなら水泳の大会にでる？」と聞いてくれました。ホストマザーがスイミングクラブの役員をしていたので大会にエントリーすることができると教えてくれました。行ったことのないプールで、周りの状況もわからず、不安で「参加したい！」とはすぐ返事できませんでした。でも、事前に、スイミングクラブの練習に2回参加させてもらって、クラブのメンバーに会うことも出来て、ホストマザーに泳ぎをほめてもらったので、出場することにしました。大会当日、思っていたよりプールの規模が大きくて観客も多く、僕が出場した50ｍ自由形は、背が高い人もいて不安だったけど、結果は1位をとることができて自分でもびっくりしました。ニュージーランドで水泳の大会に出場できて、しかも一位を取れて、アワードリボンをもらうことも出来ていい経験をすることができました。アワードリボンは記念に自分の部屋に飾っています。
今回の活動を通して、日本では経験できない事をたくさん体験することができました。これらを、今後の生活にも生かしていきたいです。
