I visited Christchurch 16 years ago for the first time. During the summer vacation of my third year of junior high school, I was sent to our sister city, Christchurch, as a member of a youth goodwill mission.
At that time, "English" was a subject I was good at, but of course I couldn't understand or speak it like a native speaker, and during my two-week homestay, I had a hard time communicating in English. However, even though I could not speak English fluently, my host family at the time welcomed me very warmly, and before I went back to Japan, it was really painful to say goodbye to them, and I remember both of us cried a little.

Looking back, the experience I had then has led me to where I am today. After experiencing a two-week homestay, I felt frustrated, saying, ``It was a lot of fun, but I wanted to communicate more in English with my host family.'' After that, I decided to study abroad in the UK for about a year when I was a university student, and I learned how to communicate in English. I can now have daily conversations without any problems. After graduating from university, I got a job at a Japanese private company with production bases overseas, and was responsible for a lot of communication with other countries. I have now returned to my hometown, Kurashiki City, and as a city hall employee, I got to be in charge of leading this youth goodwill mission.
I believe that my experience of the youth goodwill mission 16 years ago got me motivated a lot, and without it, I would not have been what I am today.

I also hope that this experience will give all the members of the youth goodwill mission an opportunity to think about their futures. I guess they would have felt confusion and hardships that they wouldn't have felt on a private trip abroad, and might have gained confidence that they can communicate to some extent even if they don't speak the language well during this experience in a country with a completely different language and culture. They must have felt various things. I hope they will cherish this experience.
This time, I went to Christchurch again as a leader and saw some parts that has changed a lot, such as the collapsed cathedral and large residential areas that had become vacant due to liquefaction after the Canterbury earthquake. The appearance of the city has changed dramatically, however, the warm hearts of the local people have not changed at all, I felt that this is why exchanges with Kurashiki as a sister city have continued for as long as 50 years. Kurashiki City provided support after the 2011 Canterbury earthquake, and Christchurch provided support after the 2018 West Japan heavy rain disaster. I hope that this kind of relationship of exchange and mutual support between us will continue into the future.

未来に繋がる経験
私が初めてクライストチャーチを訪れたのは、16年前のことでした。中学3年生の夏休みに青少年生活体験団の一員として、姉妹都市であるクライストチャーチに派遣されました。
当時の私にとって英語は得意な教科ではありましたが、勿論ネイティブ並みに理解できたり話せたりするわけもなく、２週間のホームステイ中はホストファミリーとの英語での意思疎通に苦労しました。しかし、英語を流暢に話すことができない私を当時のホストファミリーはとても温かく受け入れてくれ、帰国するときにはホストファミリーとの別れが辛く、お互いに少し涙してしまったことを覚えています。
今振り返ると、その時の経験が今に繋がっています。２週間のホームステイを経験して、「とても楽しかったけれど、ホストファミリーともっと英語でコミュニケーションを取りたかった」と悔しい気持ちもあり、その後、私は大学時代に英国に約１年間留学し、英語での日常会話は特に問題なくできるようになりました。大学卒業後は、海外に生産拠点を持つ日系民間企業に就職し、海外とのやり取りも多く担当させてもらいました。現在は地元である倉敷市に戻り、市役所職員として、今回の生活体験談の引率を担当させていただきました。
16年前、青少年生活体験団でのホームステイがあったからこそ、今の私がいるのだと思います。

また、団員の皆さんにとっても今回の経験が自分の将来について考えるきっかけになっていれば幸いです。言語も文化も全く異なる国で約２週間を過ごし、単なる海外旅行では感じられない戸惑いや苦労を感じたり、言語が十分にできなくてもある程度コミュニケーションが取れるという自信がついたり、様々なことを感じたのではないでしょうか。この経験を大切にしてほしいと思います。
今回、引率者として再びクライストチャーチに派遣されましたが、カンタベリー地震の影響で大聖堂が崩れてしまっていたり、液状化で住宅地の広い範囲が更地となっていたり、崩れた建物の跡地に新しい建物が建っていたりと、街の様子は大きく変わっていました。しかし、現地の人々の温かさは全く変わっておらず、だからこそ５０年もの長い間、倉敷市と姉妹都市としての交流が続いているのだと感じました。2011年のカンタベリー地震の際には倉敷市から支援を行い、2018年の西日本豪雨災害の際にはクライストチャーチから支援をいただきました。このような姉妹都市の交流、支え合いの関係が今後も末永く続いていくことを願っています。
