We, the seven students, were selected from among many applicants and decided to go to Kansas City as members of the youth life experience group. This is the first time for me to go abroad. So I was nervous and worried, but more than that, I was excited. Now that I have finished my life experience in Kansas City, I am really glad that I was able to go there. I like English very much, so I was very happy that I was in a living environment where there was only English. In my life in Kansas City, I could live a fulfilling life filled with many surprises, excitement, fun, and exhaustion. These 17 days were the most fresh and moving in my life.
First of all, I once again felt that studying English is important. When I visited farms and high schools in Kansas City, there were many times when I could only catch fragments of explanations in English. And, it was very frustrating when I couldn't catch the first time in everyday life. I felt that I needed to improve my ability to handle English in this age when cross-border activities are becoming more active. I think that the English I use in everyday life and the English I learn at school are completely different. If I have the opportunity to speak with a native speaker, I would cherish it
Next, while feeling the world economy, I felt firsthand that the United States is connected to Japan, where I live. Many Toyota and Honda cars were being driven in the city. In addition to high prices, we also suffered from the depreciation of the yen. A world that had the feeling of being in a different dimension has emerged as a real thing.
And about cultural differences. Even if I don't know, when we make eye contact, we will smile and exchange light greetings. Compliment each other's hairstyles and clothes with people who are shopping at the same store, and say "Have a nice day." and say goodbye. I felt very bright. This would never happen in Japan, but I thought it was wonderful. In addition, I felt cultural differences in many other areas, such as transportation, food, shops, religion, diversity, workplaces, and homes. At the same time, it was also an opportunity to see Japan objectively. I like both cultures.
I was able to have a very valuable experience in Kansas City. I want to make the things I learned through this life experience meaningful in my future life, rather than ending up with memories. Thank you to everyone involved in this program.
令和5年度姉妹都市訪問青少年生活体験団 感想文
今回、私たち７人は多くの希望者の中から選んでいただき、青少年生活体験団員として、カンザスシティ行きの切符を手にすることとなりました。私にとっては海外に行くのが初めてで、緊張と、それ以上のワクワクを抱きながらカンザスシティへと向かいました。私はとても英語が好きなので、英語しかない環境に自分がいる、ということがすごく嬉しかったです。色々なことに驚かされて、楽しんで、疲れて、という充実した日々を送ることができました。
まず、英語の勉強は大切だと改めて感じました。カンザスシティの農場や高校などを訪問したとき、英語の説明を断片的にしか聞き取れないということが多々ありました。生活している中で１回目で聞き取れなかったときもすごく悔しかったです。国境を越えた活動がさらに活発になる時代のため、英語を扱う能力を鍛えなければならないと感じました。日常的に使う英語と、学校で学ぶ英語は全然違うと思います。ネイティブの方と話す機会があれば、大切にしたいです。
次に、世界経済を感じるとともに、アメリカが私の住む日本と繋がっているということを、身を持って感じました。街にはトヨタやホンダの車が多く走っていました。高い物価に加えて円安で苦しむこともありました。どこか違う次元のような感覚のあった世界が、実際のものとして浮かび上がってきました。
そして、文化の違いについてです。私が１番好きなアメリカの文化です。それは、全く知らない人でも目が合うとニコッとして軽い挨拶を交わします。同じお店で買い物をしている人と髪型や服装を褒め合い、「良い一日を」と言って別れます。とても明るい気持ちになれました。日本では絶対にあり得ないですが、すごく素敵だと思いました。他にも、交通、食べ物、お店、宗教、多様性、職場、家など、本当に色々な場面で文化の違いを感じました。同時に、日本を客観的に捉える機会ともなりました。私はどちらの文化も好きです。
カンザスシティでとても貴重な経験をすることができ、生活体験団として行くことができて本当に良かったと心の底から思いました。今回の生活体験で学んだことを思い出にして終わるのではなく、これからの人生で意味のあるものにしていきたいです。このプログラムに関わってくださったすべての方々、ありがとうございました。
