Links with Christchurch

This was my second time to visit our sister city, Christchurch. Ten years ago I was a student member of the group. This time I joined the goodwill mission group as a co-leader. Last time I just enjoyed all the programs that the sister city committee members prepared for us. But this time I am a responsible post and have to direct the students and act as a leader.
When we met together for the first time, it seemed that we were not friendly and that the students didn't know what to say or what to do. As we had meetings, we could talk more and more freely. At last we all are good members of the team.
In Christchurch I found some things changed and some unchanged. The most changed is the Cathedral. It had been the symbol of the city for a long time. I was deeply impressed by beautiful color glass inside but it broke down eight years ago when the great earthquake attacked there. To my deep regret I can never come in back again. Not only the cathedral but many buildings in the city have not been rebuilt yet. I felt that earthquake was so terrible even after 8 years passed. I visited the same museums and streets as I was a student. They seemed to be different scenery from they were 10 years ago, maybe because I grew up.
On the other hand, great nature and warm hospitality have not changed at all. Christchurch has rich nature all around the city. There are a lot of gardens where people relax and spend peaceful time. Green trees and plants are yards and riverside, birds gather here and there, many kinds of flowers bloom in every season. We can see horses, cows and sheep in the farm just near the city. Thanks of their effort to protect the great nature, they keep their environment.
People living in this city have warm mind and welcomed us this time as well as 10 years ago. I was confused at different culture and spoke only broken English. In spite of that they were very kind and treated me just like a real family. I completely forgot I was far from my hometown and never felt I was alone.
This friendship has been grown by so many people for many years. Heart-to-heart relationship is so strong that we have to continue more and more exchange. For deeper understanding and exchange in the future I will do my best.
ニュージーランドとの繋がり

私は今回２度目のクライストチャーチの姉妹都市訪問をしました。１度目は約１０年前に学生としてこのプログラムに参加し、今回は団員のリーダーとしての参加でした。また学生時代は、現地の方が考えて下さったプログラムを普通に体験し、メンバーやリーダー達と楽しんでいました。しかし今回はリーダーとして学生達を引率する立場での参加。引率者として、学生達の見本となり指導する責任の重さを感じました。
初めて学生達と対面し研修を行った時はお互いまだ打ち解けられず戸惑いはあったけれど、回を重ねていくうちに学生同士はもちろん、チーム全体の距離がだんだん縮まっていきました。
今回、学生時代に参加した時と変わったものと変わらないものがいくつかありました。まず以前から変わったものは、約８年前に地震で崩れて悲惨な姿になった、街のシンボルである大聖堂。内部の印象的なガラス張りが残っていないのが非常に残念です。大聖堂ばかりでなく多くの建物が崩れ、未だに復旧していない様子に自然災害の悲惨さと寂しさを感じました。さらに学生時代に訪れた街や美術館も大人になった今の自分が見ると、見た時の受け止め方が違ったのか別の景色に見えました。街や景色が変わった中、学生時代と変わらなかったものは自然の豊かさと人々の心の温かさでした。クライストチャーチはたくさんの大自然に囲まれた街で、いたる所に人々が安らぐ公園があります。家の庭や川辺には木々の緑があふれ、そこにはたくさんの鳥たちが集い、季節ごとに咲き競う花々があります。街中を少し離れると、牛や馬、羊が放牧されたのどかな風景が広がっています。これらは、環境に配慮し豊かな自然を守っていこうとするこの土地の人々の努力のたまものだと感じました。この街で暮らす人々はおおらかで、１０年前も今も私たちを温かく迎え入れてくれました。文化や習慣の違いに戸惑い、片言の英語しか話せない私たちに、まるで本当の家族のように親切に接してくださり、遠い異国にいる不安も家族と離れた心細さもすっかり払拭されました。この温かい人と人とのつながりこそ長い間の交流で、多くの方々が築いてくださった強い絆だと実感しました。さらに深い理解と末永い交流のため、微力ながら自分にできることを続けていきたいと思います。
