About The Museum

Kurashiki City Art Museum was originally built as The Kurashiki City Hall designed by famous architect TANGE Kenzo in 1960. When new city hall was built, the building was designed to remodel into a municipal art museum by donation to Kurashiki-city from home-grown Japanese-style artist, IKEDA Yoson. The museum opened at once with Kurashiki-City Library and Kurashiki Museum of Natural History as cultural zone in 1983.

Special Exhibitions
Kurashiki City Art Museum holds large-scale exhibitions including original exhibition. In addition, co-hosted "Kurashiki Art Exhibitions" and "Kurashikikko Art Exhibitions" is held every year.
Collection Exhibitions
Works owned by Kurashiki City Art Museum are exhibited.

The museum holds related lectures, workshops during special exhibitions and collection exhibitions.
Lectures
The museum offers lectures that invites lecturers on various art themes.
Art Classes
The museum holds art classes in six-month course. For beginners, we have classes of watercolor painting, Japanese painting, plaster drawings, lithographs, engravings. For experience, we also have classes of lithographs (intermediate grade), engravings (intermediate grade).
Publications
The museum creates calender of our collections.

Facility Rentals

Galleries
The museum rents galleries to an individual artist and groups that exhibit their works.
Lecture Hall
The museum rents the hall to groups for lecture meeting on lifelong learning.
Conference Rooms
The museum rents rooms to groups for workshop on lifelong learning.

Collection

Kurashiki City Art Museum collects about 11,000 pieces of works. There are about 8,000 items of Japanese-style artist, IKEDA Yoson, and we have collected great variety of works including pieces of the artists related to Kurashiki. We have mainly collection of domestic works, Japanese paintings, oil paintings, watercolors, prints, drawings, sculpture, crafts.

1960
June
Established the Kurashiki City Hall. Designed by TANGE Kenzo.
1980
October
IKEDA Yoson, the notable artist of Japanese painting,who was related to Kurashiki,donated 489 pieces of his works to the city.
1981
February
Inaugurated the Committee for remodeling the former City Hall into the Municipal Museum of Art.
1982
April
Remodeling work started. Designed by URABE Shizutaro,a prominent architect born in Kurashiki.
1983
November
Museum opening
